— The legend of Cactus Kate —
The Cactus Kate® Trichocereus collection is comprised of authentic Peruvian varieties collected decades ago by New Zealander Kate Jackson.  After her death the Trichocereus collection at Desert Theatre Nursery in Watsonville moved to the California Central Valley. Today it thrives in fertile valley soil irrigated with water from the Sierra Nevada mountains.
Kate raised huge stands of San Pedro cactus — Trichocereus pachanoi propagated from a cutting brought back from Peru by a U.C. Santa Cruz botanist in the 1960s.  In 1987 Kate taught me how to root cuttings into new plants; allowing her legacy specimens to multiply until they are available to everyone.

Today her collection includes T. peruvianus (many sub-variations), T. pachanoi, T. bridgesii (long and short spine, plus the monstrose form), T. spacianus, Juul's Giant, and a very fast growing blue skin, short spine peruvianus that grows like San Pedro on steroids. Kate's generous spirit lives on in the plants she loved to share with everyone. Those efforts have brought praise from collectors all across America. Thank you Kate, thank you customers, thank you plant spirits.

This is one of Kate's 14 foot tall stands of authentic Trichocereus pachanoi. I have been propagating this mother plant by cuttings every year for decades. Just so you know this is what they look like in their natural form.

"Desert Theater in Watsonville was cool, the gal that ran it was a trip, kind of Gothic and eccentric. Gone. Gone, Gone, Gone."
